Nicolai (Strelitzia Nicolai) or more commonly know as the Giant Bird Of Paradise comes from sub-tropical South Africa. It is a large growing wide leaf plant, reaching a height of 10-12 metres. Multiple trunks will form at the base, therefore needing space away from solid objects when growing. It can be grown well both indoors & outdoors and prefers subtropical climates. Depending on where you live, flower blooms can happen all year round. The flowers are about 30cm long, light blue/grey with a white feather like crest.

  • Does not grow well in temperatures below 8 degrees C
  • Drought tolerant
  • Can withstand salty winds
  • Is not self cleaning - requires trimming & tidying
  • No spikes or spines
