Tiger Grass (Thysanolaena maxima) despite its similar appearance to bamboo is actually a perennial clumping variety of grass. Despite its origins in Thailand, tiger grass will thrive well in almost all areas of Australia excluding those of harsh colds & frost.

The tropical green leaves grow directly off each culm in an upward and out habit forming a gorgeous tropical fanning V shape screening. The natural footprint size of the clump is 1mtr however this can be reduced to plant into smaller spaces down to 50cm, provided the air space is available for it to naturally fan out at the top of the plant.

Being a clumping species it is non-invasive and will not spread or overtake gardens like running varieties of bamboos etc. It is a relatively static grower which makes it extremely easy to maintain.

The plant will grow up to 3-4 metres in height, and creates a dense clumping look which makes it an ideal option for privacy. However unlike bamboo species it cannot be trimmed shorter.

Tiger Grass is extremely quick growing and can be fully grown within 18 - 24 months, or quicker if you purchase more established sized plants.  In general it is fairly low maintenance and drought tolerant  plant once established, though regular water does enhance appearance during dry periods.

  • Clumping variety
  • Grows to 3/4 metres
  • Prefers full sun to part shade
  • Can be grown in pots & troughs
  • Not frost tolerant
